Google unleashes best example yet of double standards?

Posted on by Joe Friedlein

Anyone involved with SEO will have no doubt seen the announcement that Google is "enhancing our default search experience for signed-in users". There has been a strong reaction to the news and I can see why. What does the change actually mean? In a nutshell, it means that Google will start encrypting searches and (more importantly) outbound clicks by default. You can read more at a new help page. At…

How relevant are Google’s search results?

Posted on by Browser Media

Every now and then, we find ourselves getting very frustrated by Google's search results.  We are great champions of the search engine and ultimately depend on it for our existence, but occasionally find evidence of fairly poor results that are hard to defend (believe us, we spend quite a bit of time defending Google and explaining why a particular site doesn't really deserve the high rankings that the site owner…

A step backwards for Google?

Posted on by Browser Media

An interesting announcement over at the Google Webmaster Central Blog and one that we are not convinced is a good move and another possible entry for Google’s annus horriblis. It appears that the new feature is only live in the US as we cannot, despite trying a wide range of searches, see the new results formats but the fundamental change is that more results are going to be show for…

Thank you for all those who contacted us directly and agreed with the frustration that this can cause and thank you to those sites that linked to the article. Such was the response that we would like to do a mini test to see if it is in fact possible to…

Beware of the Google ‘search’ network

Posted on by Browser Media

We like Google. We spend quite a bit of time defending Google to our clients and explaining how embracing Google's quest for relevant search results is the most effective form of search engine marketing in the long term. Every now and then we do, however, come across examples of the greed that many people despise Google for and find it hard to justify. A recent example raises serious question marks…

Google is ‘white bread for the mind’

Posted on by Browser Media

As the morning news today claimed that most students in the UK are guilty of plagiarism and copy and paste huge chunks of material found on the internet, a UK professor has criticised the effect that Google is having on students, calling the search engine ‘white bread for the mind’ Tara Brabazon of the University of Brighton believes that the easy access to information that Google offers students is taking away their critical abilities….

EC likely to hold up Google/DoubleClick deal

Posted on by Browser Media

The planned acquisition of online ad firm DoubleClick by search engine giant Google is likely to be delayed, depending on whether or not the European Commission decides upon a full investigation of the deal. The EC’s competition watchdog has until the end of October to make a decision over an investigation, which would delay the deal for at least four months. Google had asked the Commission to investigate the deal,…

Google responds to click fraud concerns

Posted on by Browser Media

There was an interesting article on Forbes last week, which featured Google’s Senior Product Manager Shuman Ghosemajumder talking about the issue. Google has previously faced legal action from advertisers over the issue, and many third party reports suggest that the click fraud problem is growing. For instance, monitoring firm ClickForensics estimated in July that the overall industry average click fraud rate for the second quarter of the year was 15.8%,…
