Breaking news on Twitter

Posted on by Emily Wiggins

It may not be new, but it certainly seems that the debate between traditional media outlets and social media has hit a new high after staff at news agency Associated Press have reportedly been reprimanded for breaking news on Twitter (as opposed to through the wire) when several AP journalists were arrested at the Occupy Wall Street camp in Manhattan, US. It may not be ground-breaking news but certainly highlights…

Increasing brand awareness through Twitter – Goaldash

Posted on by Toby Pratt

Like many, one of the reasons I use Twitter is to follow high profile people (and brands) that either entertain or influence me in some way – comedians, politicians, actors, musicians and brands. I also follow a number of elite sportspeople, including professional footballers. On 2nd November I was flicking through my Twitter feed, scanning the tweets for anything that could entertain me during my lunch break. Something unusual was…

The Guardian rolls out @GuardianTagBot (it’s not SIRI)

Posted on by Browser Media

We live in a world of instant gratification, where content on demand is the norm and anything less is unacceptable. It’s a privileged situation, but one we keep trying to improve. Earlier this week we shared a post about SIRI – Apple’s new ‘personal assistant’ that lives inside the new iPhone 4S and responds to your voice commands by performing everyday tasks like setting alarms, checking the weather or searching…

Twitter has the X Factor

Posted on by Emily Wiggins

Over the last couple of years the way we watch TV has been revolutionised, with shows such as ‘Notting Hill’ and the ‘Million Pound Drop’ using social media as an integral element of the show. Twitter, and to some extent Facebook, have allowed us to interact with our favourite programmes in real time. These platforms allow two-way communication enabling us to feel closer to the show, interact with characters, find…

Real-time chat comes to Twitter

Posted on by Matt Batterham

Twitter, in my humble opinion, is great for 3 things – aggregating news, following what my friends are up to and complaining about stuff. Of course, everyone’s agenda is different, but what remains the same are the standard limitations set by Twitter – messages of 140 characters delivered one of two ways, publically via mentions or privately via Direct Messaging. Each of these methods have their place and until now,…

Twitter boasts 100 million active users, half login daily

Posted on by Browser Media

It’s been revealed that the number of people who use Twitter has grown to 100 million. Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo, announced the news during an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit held in San Francisco on Monday evening. It’s been nothing but growth for Twitter over the last year or so. In June the company announced that it had surpassed the 200 million tweets per day milestone, double the number…

If Twitter followers were goals, Arsenal would be top of the league

Posted on by Matt Batterham

If you have the slightest interest in football you’ll probably be aware of the recent misfortunes of Arsenal FC. 4 points from 5 games, a goal difference of –8, a defence forged from clowns and a current position on the cusp of the relegation zone. The list goes on but it’s safe to say things couldn’t be going much worse for the North London club. Image via Flickr But Arsenal…

Twitter rolls out web analytics tool

Posted on by Browser Media

Before you get too excited, Twitter has not launched the much hyped ‘Twitter analytics’ – the company has launched an analytics service that allows you to see how much traffic your website receives from Twitter, rather than how much traffic your Twitter page receives. But still cool though, right? The service, that was announced at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference yesterday, will provide helpful information to those who use Twitter for…

Twitter aggregates your tweeted images in to User Galleries

Posted on by Browser Media

Over the past few months Twitter has been busy improving many aspects of it’s service, including better search functionality and improved image sharing. Perhaps the most notable advancement of late comes in the form of ‘User Galleries’, which in a nutshell “aggregate the images you've uploaded in your Tweets into an organized page where you can view all of your most recent images.” And about time too. image via Twitter…
